Billbored & the Scenic Coastal Byway

Billbored

Used without permission from "http://farisyakob.typepad.com/blog/2007/10/billboards-for-.html"

Does anyone else feel billboards are a blight on our new Door County Scenic Coastal Byway?  If you ask me, they are visual pollution, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I have yet to see one that is visually beautiful as well.

For the most part, it will be hard to eliminate the billboards in door county, there are two companies that sell billboard space and I don’t see them giving up their livelihood any time soon. Is it too much to ask that a little art and creativity go into these billboard designs?  My one and only favorite billboard fell during a large storm a few years back, it was the Not licked yet billboard, plenty of cute trolls eating ice cream.

Other art murals like that at Mojo Rosa’s and

Door County Kayak Tours,

have been given a tough time for creating a piece of art on their buildings.  Fine Line Designs uses art sculptures to attract attention and some winery’s use vineyards to do the same.

So do we want to end up like the Dells’s with their distinctive landscape which was singled out by a national organization, Scenic America. for being the “most blighted” vacation area in the United States or are we going to look at advertising with a creative modality like these few Door County businesses have?

Our new kayak tour location, chosen as top 5 lighthouses in North America to climb.

Now that the Mink River estuary is too low to kayak, we have created a new signature kayak tour to Cana Island Lighthouse!  This two hour kayak tour kayaks up to one of “the most famous 10 lighthouses dotting the shores of Wisconsin’s scenic Door County on Lake Michigan.” Straight from Mini Time.

“Cool fact: Cana Island is one of only a few remaining lighthouses in the United States whose original lens is still used as its primary navigational aid.”

Off Season Adventures!

Recently, I was fortunate enough to be able to make the trip out to Jackson, WY for some spring powder skiing. Spring skiing can be spotty, but just as I had hoped, we arrived with a fresh twelve inches of snow to welcome us to the wild west. The backcountry riding was phenomenal, it seemed as if I was carving along a cloud as I rode through the endless powder in the back bowls. My favorite run in particular was the Powder Eight bowl. This bowl is not serviced by the tram making it a long hike, but the reward is well worth it! Being able to point out your line thousands of feet above to your buddies on the shuttle back to town is an awesome feeling.

For those of you adventure enthusiasts who enjoy buckling on the skies or board, I’d recommend making the trip to Jackson sometime. Just like Door County, it has a small town persona that can not be replicated as well as some of the best backcountry riding in the states.

Kayak fisherman dodges shark…thank you unsalted Lake Michigan!

Ocean Fishing Kayaks

Just spotted a great little news cast out of Oahu about a local kayak fisherman that caught a tuna and had a tiger shark jump out of the water to eat it, catching it all on his go pro!

Makes me smile paddling around unsalted Lake Michigan, we use the same ocean kayak fishing boat for our guides and we are still working at bringing you kayak salmon fishing to the Door County area.  Let me know your kayak salmon fishing interest in the comments area.

I fear we might have started something…water jumping

We might have set the fire on this water jumping trend. I have a feeling we are going to be doing this again this summer, maybe Michael Fischer releases a new pose. Oh no, everyone the new planking has changed into water jumping.  At the end of every guide training session we have our annual water jump.  This past years was sponsored by Michael Fischer’s Sister Bay Visitor Guide.  So you want to be a guide, fill out our potential questionaire now.

Spring’s Finally Here……or is it?

It still feels like Winter in Door County but Wednesday March 20th marks the vernal equinox despite the lingering cold.

Astronomically, the vernal equinox marks the moment at which Earth’s axis tilts neither away from nor toward the sun, resulting in nearly equal periods of daylight and darkness across the globe. An observer on Earth’s equator will see the sun at zenith before its direct rays shift northward toward the Tropic of Cancer over the next three months.

Astronomers may think of the vernal equinox as an astronomical transit point when the Earth-sun relationship stands in perfect balance. This is true when we consider that all locations on Earth experience slightly over 12 hours of daylight, as well as the position of sunrise and sunset with respect to the horizon.

Over 12 hours of daylight, or delight? Happy Spring!

Door County Beach Testing in Jeopardy!

Door County Daily News Reported yesterday some startling information about Beach Testing.

Here is a little background, The Door County Health Department, UW-Oshkosh and WDNR have been hiring students to do testing of bacteria count at numerous beaches around Door County, 23 to be exact.  I remember the initial illness scare fondly, a kid had a rough few days of the poops.   Since then, I haven’t heard of any illnesses and there have been no reported illnesses.

The Bad News…!

“… the future of the testing was cast into doubt when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency pulled funding for the program.  Kolberg says the EPA provided about $56,000 a year…” Door County Daily News

The Good News…!!!

“The Village of Egg Harbor, for example, has committed $1,000 to the cause.” as well as the DCVB have committed money. Door County Daily News

For up to date information about Door County Beach Closures.

More Good News…!

Lets find a solution to this problem…Any ideas?

Some thoughts to ponder.

  • Instead of just measuring the effect, why don’t we look at curing the cause?  I feel this is a paradigm we are living in i.e.  prescription drugs, weight loss, and now beach closures. Lets work at curing the effect as well as measuring the cause and effect.
  • Milwaukee and Chicago are allowed to release millions of gallons of sewage into the lake when there is excessive rain, I feel this happens a number of times during the spring, summer and fall.  Quite a design flaw, where are the engineers at?  How this is legal is beyond me?  They just required all the septic tanks around Door County to be replaced by individual owners.  We as individual home owners are required to respond, but cities arn’t?
  • I heard Paul Stamets lecture a few years back and he mentioned using mycrofiltration, I am a big fan of his work, here is an interesting article showing a grant awarded him by the epa to study e.coli removal from storm water…
